222 - This is the Real Texas

We had a plan.  A straight forward one.  With a list of ghost towns to visit we were off.   What was to be a short foray into Chappell Hill became a two hour visit as we met and talked to Miss Whitmore and Mr Brown.  The next day, Saturday and Sunday morning was to be the Scarecrow Festival celebration.  We were not able to accomplish the original goal but we saw some very interesting sites, and met some wonderful people.

Miss Whitmore, a spry and alert 85 year old widow regaled us with stories of Chappell Hill and Brenham.  Her family has been in the area since the 19th century.  She told us stories of her family, friends, famous and not so famous people.  She told us about the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1867 which cause so much fear in the area.

Artist Dan Brown setting up his booth.  We went gaga over the quality of his work.  A very nice man who was constantly helping others.  Great conversation.  He has visited all the places in his paintings.

And of course, being good citizens, we stayed over for the wedding.

Bud Royer's Round-Top Cafe in Round Top of course.  This place was very friendly and the food was really nice.  It has a very eclectic decor.  On the way out I was asked if I worked for a food magazine.  I guess chubby guys with big cameras get that.  Below is the tenderloin burger and fries we had.

And of course, least we forget, get out and vote for the next governor of the great state of Texas...  What can we say that has not already been said about Mr. Friedman?  Here is a link to why we should vote for him, and an interview with Samantha Brown of the Travel Channel.

Throughout the day, Tom kept saying, "This is the real Texas..."  Will write more about our travels tomorrow.
